x = smaller Number
Two numbers that have a difference of 12
x+12-x = 12
and a quotient of 3
x+12/x = 3
Multiply each side by x
x+12 = 3x
12 = 2x
6 = x
Substitute x for 6
6+12 = 18
The numbers are 18 and 6.

18 - 6 = 12
12 = 12
18/6 = 3
