You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two cars are driving towards each other.
The first car is driving at 30 mph north and is 5 miles south of the intersection.
The second car is driving 40 mph west and is 6 miles east of the intersection
what is the closest the cars ever get to one another?
;
This will occur when faster car reaches the intersection
Find the time (in minutes) required for the faster car to reach the intersection.
6%2F40 * 60 = 9 min
Find the time required by the slower car to reach the intersection
5%2F30 * 60 = 10 min
Therefore the slow car is 1 min away from the intersection when the fast car is at the intersection
Find how far that is (dist = speed * time)
30 * 1%2F60 = .5 mi is the closest they will get to each other
