filled. After two hours of filling the pool had 573 gallons in it and after five hours of filling it had 945 gallons in it. How many gallons were in the pool when it first began filling?
Let initial amount of water in pool be I, and filling rate, per hour, be R
In 2 hours, 2R gallons is added
It can be said then, that initial amount of water, plus added amount from hose, equals total in pool at that point, OR:
I + 2R = 573 ------- eq (i)
Also, I + 5R = 945 ------- eq (ii)
5I 10R = 2,865 ------- Multiplying eq (i) by 5 ----- eq (iii)
2I + 10R = 1,890 ------- Multiplying eq (ii) by 2 ------- eq (iv)
3I = 975 ------ Adding eqs (iv) & (iii)
I, or initial amount in pool =
, or
gallons
You can do the check!!
