Question 92748: This might be a stupid question but, it's bothering me so here it is: Evaluate the expression for the given value of x : -x%5E2%2Bx-1 x=-1
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to put the -1 in parentheses because if I do I get a different answer.
Look: -%28-1%29%5E2%2B%28-1%29-1=-3 or --1^2+-1-1=-1
Which is it?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Not a stupid question. This confuses a lot of math students. The correct way is:
.
-%28-1%29%5E2%2B%28-1%29-1=-3
.
and that's exactly the way you should have done it.
.
Good job of thinking about this problem.
