With x being the smaller truck's capacity, and y the larger truck's capacity, we get:
8x + 4y = 36_____2(4x + 2y) = 2(18)______4x + 2y = 18 ------ eq (i)
4x + 8y = 48 ------- eq (ii)
- 6y = - 30 ------ Subtracting eq (ii) from eq (i)
y, or larger truck's capacity =  , or  tons
4x + 2(5) = 18 ------ Substituting 5 for y in eq (i)
4x + 10 = 18
4x = 18 - 10
4x = 8
x, or smaller truck's capacity =  , or  tons
