undoing the division gives (x-3)(x^2+3x-5)+2 ... x^3+3x^2-5x-3x^2-9x+15+2 ... f(x)=x^3-14x+17

f(3)=3^3-14(3)+17=27-42+17=2

this is an example of the remainder theorem; which states that when you divide f(x) by (x-a) the remainder equals f(a)
