Answer by FadelSalem(12) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! One number is 8 less than another. If 9 times the smaller number minus 4 times the larger number is 8, find the two numbers
Let the first number be x and the second be y then:
x < y by 8 ..............>
y - x = 8 (1)
9x - 4y = 8 (2)
9y - 9x = 72 (1)
9x - 4y = 8 (2)
by addition: 5y = 80
divide by 5: y = 16
substitute in eq (1) we get:
16 - x = 8 So, x = 16 - 8 = 8
the two numbers are : 8 and 16
