Question 925640: gud pm may i ask this... how many pounds of a 35% salt solution and how many pounds of a 14% salt solution should be combined so that 50 lb of a 20% salt solution is obtained.?
2. Two airplaines, travelling in opposite direction, leave an airport at the same time. if one plane 480 mph and the other average 520 mph. how will it take before they are 2000 miles apart?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! how many pounds of a 35% salt solution and how many pounds of a 14% salt solution should be combined so that 50 lb of a 20% salt solution is obtained.?
Equation::
salt + salt = salt
0.35x + 0.14(50-x) = 0.20*50
-----------
Multiply thru by 100 to get:
35x + 14*50 - 14x = 20*50
Solve for "x"::
21x = 6*50
x = (2/7)50
x = 14.29 lb (amt. of 35% solution needed)
50-x = 35.71 lb (amt. of 14% solution needed)
-----------------------------------------------------
2. Two airplaines, travelling in opposite direction, leave an airport at the same time. if one plane 480 mph and the other average 520 mph. how will it take before they are 2000 miles apart?
---
They are separating at the rate of 480+520 = 1000 mph
Time = distance/rate
Time = 2000/1000 = 2 hours
------------------------------
