In this case you should apply the power of 2 to both sides to cross out the square roots.
(sqrt(x-2))^2 + (sqrt(4-x))^2 = (sqrt(6-x))^2
x - 2 + 4 - x = 6 - x
Now you have to take like terms to one side:
x - x + x = 6 - 4 + 2
x = 4
Check:
Sqrt(4-2) + Sqrt(4-4) = Sqrt(6-4)
1.414... + 0 = 1.414...
1.414 = 1.414
