You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The range of radar at an airport is 12km.
An aeroplane flies parallel to the airport runway at a distance of 6km from the runway at a speed of 180km/hr.
For how long to the nearest second does the plane show up on the radar?
:
We can solve this using the triangle formed by the airplane path, the point where it enters radar coverage and where it leaves radar coverage(both points are 12km from the airport)
This triangle can be divided into two right triangles, by drawing a point from the airport to the middle of the path.
:
Solve this right triangle a^2 + b^2 = c^2, where
a = 6km
b = half the distance of the path
c = 12km
b = sqrt%2812%5E2+-+6%5E2%29
b = 10.4 km
therefore the path of the aircraft inside radar coverage: 2*10.4 = 20.8 km
How long does it take for the aircraft to travel this distance at 180 km/hr
20.8%2F180 * 60 = 6.93 min which is 6 + .93(60) = 6 min 56 seconds
