Two cyclists start 60km apart. If they cycle towards each other, they meet in an hour and if they cycle in the same direction they meet in five hours. Find their average speeds.

Two cyclists start 60km apart.-----------d
let speed of one be x & the other y
If they cycle towards each other,effective speed = (x+y)

they meet in an hour t = 1
d/r=t
60/(x+y)=1
x+y=60..............................(1)
and if they cycle in the same direction, effective speed = x-y
they meet in five hours.t=5 Find their average speeds.
60/(x-y)=5
x-y=12.............................(2)
Add (1) & (2)
2x=72
/2
x=36 km/h
x+y =60
therefore y= 60-x
=60-36
=24 km/h
36 km/h & 24 km/h
