You can
put this solution on YOUR website!
the formula to use in this type of problem is:
r*p*t = q
r is the rate of work per person.
p is the number of people.
t is the time
q is the quantity.
in this problem.
p = 8 men
t = 10 hours
q = 1 wall
replace p and t and q in the equation and you get:
r*p*t = q becomes:
r*8*10 = 1
simplify to get:
r*80 = 1
divide both sides of the equation by 80 to get:
r = 1/80
1 man can build 1/80 of the wall in 1 hour.
confirm by replacing r with 1/80 in the original problem to get:
1/80 * 8 * 10 = 1
simplify to get 80/80 = 1 which then becomes 1 = 1.
this confirms the rate per person is correct.
now you want to know how long it will take one man to build the wall.
r*p*t=q becomes:
r = 1/80
p = 1
t = what you want to find.
q = 1
equation becomes:
1/80 * 1 * t = 1
simplify to get:
1/80 * t = 1
multiply both sides of this equation by 80 to get:
t = 80
it will take one man 80 hours to build the wall by himself assuming he works at the same rate of 1/80 of the wall per hour.
