y = smaller number

x - y = 12
2x = 3y

Plug in x = 3y/2 into equation 1.

3y/2 - y = 12
y/2 = 12
y = 24

The numbers are 36 and 24.

Since twice the larger is equal to three times the smaller, the two numbers are in the ratio 3:2.

So the two numbers can be represented by 3x and 2x.

The difference between 3x and 2x is 3x-2x=x.
