In order to solve this problem, you have to know the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle, which is p=2L+2w
L=length and w=width

1. From the problem
p=18
L=6
2. substitute these values into the perimeter formula:
18yd=2(6 yd) + 2w
3. distribute
18=12+2w
4. Subtract 12 from each side

18-12=12-12+2w
5. Simplify. The 12's on the right cancel out leaving:
6=2w
6. Divide by 2 because you want w by itself
6/2=2w/2
simplify this answer leaving:
3=w
to check your answer substitute all three variables into the perimeter formula and solve:
18=2(6)+2(3)
18=18 therefore 3 is the correct answer.
