For a given 2 digit number, the second digit is 2 more than 5 times the first digit. Also, 5 times the first digit is 3 more than the second digit. Find the two digit number.
How can a number be 2 more and 3 more than the same number. Also, because we're multiplying by 5, anything after 1 is more than one digit, so it can't be part of the number. Please help! (It's been a while since I've done this, obviously.) :)

Let T be the digit for the tens place and let U be the digit in the ones place.
The two-digit number is 10T+U.
In this expression for the number, T and U are both DIGITS and NUMBERS.

The "second" digit means the variable U and the "first" digit is the variable, T.

The description about them means, U=2%2B5T; and 5T=3%2BU.
Those are a system of two equations in two unknown variable.
You may still be struggling to know what to do with these equations but your
daughter probably does know what to do with them to solve for T and U.
