Question 91560: Find the volume of a bucket?
Answer by bucky(2189) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! You need to re-post this problem with a little better explanation of what you are looking for.
.
Here are some of the questions I have:
.
Are you looking for the volume that the bucket is capable of containing? Or are you looking
for the volume of the material that the bucket is made of?
.
Are you looking for a mathematical solution, or just a "real-world" physical solution?
.
If you are looking for a mathematical solution, you need to specify the shape of the bucket
and its dimensions.
.
However, if you are looking for a practical solution you can do it this way:
.
If you want to find the volume that the bucket can carry, you can fill it to the brim with
water. Then pour the contents out into quart jars. Measure the number of quarts plus the
last partial quart and multiply your answer by 0.0334 to convert the quarts to cubic
feet. For example, if you fill the bucket to the brim and pour out the contents into
6.48 quart jars, the volume that the bucket holds is 6.48 times 0.0334 or 0.216432 cubic
feet.
.
It is a little different real world problem to find the volume of the material which makes
up the bucket. Set a tub inside another tub. Fill the inside tub to the brim with water.
Then carefully and slowly sink the bucket (on its side) into the water of the inner tub
until the bucket is fully submerged. It will displace water which will spill over the brim
of the inner tub and be caught by the outer tub. Drain the spilled water from the outer
tub. This spilled water will be equal to the volume of the material that comprises the
bucket. As you did previously, you can pour this spilled water into quart measures
and multiply the number of quarts (or parts thereof) by 0.0334 to find the number of
cubic feet. This answer in cubic feet will equal the volume of the material in the bucket.
.
Hope this helps explain to you the difference methods that might be applied. If you are
looking for a math solution, you need to provide more information about the dimensions
of the bucket (shape and critical measures).
