You are putting up a fence surrounding your garden behind your house. There is one side enclosed by the house and three sides of fencing around your garden. You used 58 feet of fencing in all for all sides, and there is one long side and two short sides. Let x equal to the length of the short sides.
Use the distributive property to write an expression and simplify for the area.

If x is the length of the 2 short sides, and with the perimeter being 58 feet, length of longer side = 58 - x
Area of garden: x(58 - x), or 
However, if x is the length of one of the shorter sides, then the total length of the 2 shorter sides = 2x
And, with the perimeter being 58 feet, length of longer side = 58 - 2x
Area of garden, then is: x(58 - 2x), or
