well how many hearts or clubs are there in a deck of cards?...either do this in terms of the number of cards...13 in each suit, so 26 in total...out of 52 cards. The probability is therefore 26/52 --> 1/2

Or do it by suits...there are 4 suits and we want the card we pick to be a heart or a club..so either of these 2 suits, so Probability = 2/4 --> 1/4

Jon.

OOps, Jon is going too fast! The answer of 2/4 reduces to 1/2.
