Question 911886: Hello, i was wondering if i can get help with this problem.
"The ground speed for jet traffic from Los Angeles to New York City can be about 100 mi/h faster than the ground speed from New York City to Los Angeles. This difference is due to a strong westerly wind at high altitudes. If "r" is a jet's ground speed from New York City to Los Angeles, write and simplify and expression for the round-trip air time. The two cities are about 2500 mi apart.
I managed to reason out these expressions so far:
L.A to N.Y. = 2500/(r+100)
N.Y to L.A. = 2500/r
Im not sure what else to do, but i hope someone can help. Found 2 solutions by richwmiller, lwsshak3:Answer by richwmiller(17219) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! r*t=d
(r+50)*t=2500
t=2500/(r+50) with the wind
(r-50)*T=2500
T=2500/(r-50) against the wind
t=2500/(r+50) with the wind
t+T=2500/(r-50) +2500/(r+50)
t+T = (5000r)/((r-50) (r+50))
t+T = (5000r)/(r^2-2500)

let x=speed of jet in still air
c=speed of wind=50 mph(50 mph faster in one directiom and 50 mph slower in the other direction equals a difference of 100 mph between the two directions)
(x+c)speed of plane with the wind
(x-c)speed of plane against the wind
travel time=distance/speed
round trip air time=
