f + m = 72
My father will be 6 years older than my mother in five years' time.
Your father is 6 yrs older than you mother now, before and in 5 yrs time, in short, forever!
f = m + 6

Back to f + m = 72
Replace f with (m+6)
m + 6 + m = 72
2m = 72 - 6
2m = 66
m = 66/2
m = 33 yrs is your mother's
