The other tutor didn't complete the equation.
1/40+1/50=1/x
where x is the number of hours working together
You could also write it
x/40+x/50=1
where x/40 is the fraction/portion of the job that John does
and x/50 is the fraction/portion that Nick does.
and 1 represent one complete job
Be advised the numbers are a little messy.
