let w = distance walked
then
(w+3) = distance jogged

Write a time equation; time = dist/speed
walk time + jog time = 3 hrs
w%2F2 + %28%28w%2B3%29%29%2F4 = 3
multiply the equation by 8
8*w%2F2 + 8*%28%28w%2B3%29%29%2F4 = 8*3
cancel the denominators
4w + 2(w+3) = 24
4w + 2w + 6 = 24
6w = 24 - 6
