I think the train's conductors are smart. I'd be hightailing it out of Detroit as fast as possible!
The first train has a 140km head start. So what you need to find is 1430-140=1290. Together they travel 70+90=160 kmh. 1290/160=8.0625 hours. Add that to the 2 hours head start to get 10 hours 37.5 minutes.

a train left detroit and traveled west at 70 km/h. two hours later, another train left detroit and traveled east at 90 km/h. how many hours had the first train traveled when they were 1430 km apart?
***
let x=travel time of 2nd train
x+2=travel time of 1st train
distance=speed*travel time
90x+70(x+2)=1430
90x+70x+140=1430
160x=1290
x=8.0625
how many hours had the first train traveled when they were 1430 km apart? 10.0625
