one electrician can rewire a home in 10 hours. his partner can rewire the same home in 6 hours. how long will it take the two electricians to rewire the if they work together?
----------------------
electrician rate:: 1/10 job/hr
partner rate:: 1/6 job/hr
together rate:: 1/x job/hr
----------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
1/10 + 1/6 = 1/x
6x + 10x = 60
16x = 60
x = 3 3/4 hrs (time to do the job together)

Time together is not an average of the two times:
NOte time together is less time than one person can do it alone.
x time together
1%2F10+%2B+1%2F6+=+1%2Fx
6x + 10x = 60
16x = 60
x = 60/16 = 3.75hr
