Question 907922: Two planes just took off from Milwaukee,WI. The first plane is traveling 3times as fast as the second plane. After traveling in the same direction for 8.5 hours, they are 1649 miles apart. What is the average speed of each plane.
I tried these two equations but it's not right. A is plane one and B plane two
a=3b and 8.5a + 8.5b = 1649

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D = rt
b, slower plane
8.5(3b) - 8.5(b) = 1649
25.5b - 8.5b = 1649
17b = 1649
b = 97mph
3b = 291mph
