Question 907891: Each side of a hexagon is 4 inches less than a side of a square. The perimeter of the hexagon is equal to the perimeter of the square. Find a side of the hexagon and a side of the square.
I still cannot figure out why I don't get these questions. If someone could please help me out. Thank you.

Each side of a hexagon is 4 inches less than a side of a square. The perimeter of the hexagon is equal to the perimeter of the square. Find a side of the hexagon and a side of the square.

side of square = x
side of hexagon = x-4
----
Perimeter of square = 4x
Perimeter of hexagon = 6(x-4) = 6x-24
------
Equation:
4x = 6x-24
2x = 24
x = 12 (side of square)
x-4 = 8 (side of hexagon)
