Question 906964: A duck and a chicken are walking to school. One way, the trip takes 2 hours for the duck and 3 hours for the chicken, since the chicken lives 40 miles farther away than the duck. The chicken travels 5 mph faster than the duck. Find their average rates of travel.
* You are supposed to get 55 mph for the duck and 60 mph for the chicken as the answer but I cannot figure out how my teacher got these solutions.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2*55=110
3*60=180
180-110=70
The chicken is 40 miles farther not 70 miles.
Either you gave the wrong information or the teacher is wrong
*t=d
r*2=d
(r+5)*3=d+40
3r+15=2r+40
r=25 mph for the duck
Now that is power walking!
r+5=30 mph for the chicken.
2*25=50 miles for the duck
3*30=90 miles for the chicken
