from the problem we get the following:
2x-4=36
to solve for x, we want to get x all by iself. Therefore, we must add 4 to each side and divide each side by 2.

2x-4+4=36+4 the 4's on the left side cancel each other out because they equal 0. That gives us 2x=40, now we divide both sides by 2 thus
2x/2=40/2 this causes the 2 on the left to cancel out leaving us with one x on the left side which is what we wanted and 40/2 on the right side.
x=40/2 now all we have to do is 40/2=20. Therefore, the answer is 20. If you want to check it you can plug 20 back into the equation for x as follows:
2(20)-4=36
