Question 900605: The Natchez Trace Parkway is a historical 444-mile route from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. A couple drove the Trace in four days. Each day they drove 6 more miles than the previous day. How many miles did they drive each day?

I set it up as follows: x+x+6+x+6+x+6=444
4x+18=444
4x=426
x=106.2 miles

The Natchez Trace Parkway is a historical 444-mile route from Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee. A couple drove the Trace in four days. Each day they drove 6 more miles than the previous day. How many miles did they drive each day?
1st day:: x miles
2nd day:: x+6 miles
3rd day:: x+12 miles
4th day:: x+18 miles
------
Equation:
4x + 36 = 444
x + 9 = 111
x = 102 miles
----
1st:: 102
2nd:: 108
3rd:: 114
4th:: 120

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x+x+6+x+12+x+18=444
4x+36=444
4x=408
x=102 the first day
This is an arithmetic progression
S = ½(2*a1 + (n-1)d)n
444 = ½(2*a1 + (3)6)4
a1 = 102
102 the first day
102+6=108 the second day
108+6=114 the third day
114+6=120 the 4th day
102+108+114+120=444
x+x+6+x+12+x+18
an = a1 + (n - 1)d
a2 = 102 + (1)6=108
a3 = 102+ (2)6=114
a4 = 102 + (3)6=120
