If you change everything to a common denominator, it's much easier. Let's use 20ths.
1%2F4=5%2F20
1%2F10=2%2F20
3%2F4=15%2F20
9%2F10=18%2F20
Now your problem is 5%2F20-2%2F20 over 15%2F20-18%2F20, or
3%2F20over-3%2F20
Cancel out the 20ths to get
3%2F-3 which reduces to -1
