Question 900435: Two mechanics worked on a car. The first mechanic worked for
10
hours, and the second mechanic worked for
5
hours. Together they charged a total of
$1250
. What was the rate charged per hour by each mechanic if the sum of the two rates was
$175
per hour?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the rate charged per hour by first mechanic be x
Let the rate charged per hour by second mechanic be y
Together they charged a total of $1250. So
10x + 5y = 1250 -------> equation 1
The sum of the two rates is $175. So
x + y = 175 --------> equation 2
Solve equation 1 & 2 by multiplying equation 2 by 5 and subtracting
10x + 5y = 1250
5x + 5y = 875 (subtract)
--------------------
5x = 375
x = 375/5 = 75
from equation 2
y = 175-x = 175 -75 = 100
The rate charged per hour by first mechanic is $75
The rate charged per hour by second mechanic is $100
