Question 898010: Please help me solve this equation, I tried and I am not very good... : You work 10 hours and earn 85$, What is your earning rate?
I've tried to solve it like this; 10hours/1$ = 85$/1hour but then I had gotten lost because it didn't look right... So I tried just dividing both by five and thought it would be easier... 2hrs=17$ so I put 1hr= $8.50 and don't know if I had done it right or not... Please help.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Key idea, RATE, like ration, like RATIO, the comparison of two numbers, usually in the form of a fraction.

One worked 10 hours and earned $85.
Just form a rate with those measures, INCLUDING THE UNITS. That's all; nothing more complicated. Form the ratio!

How's this:
%2810%2Ahour%29%2F%2885%2Adollars%29

%2810%2F85%29%28hours%2Fdollar%29

%28%282%2A5%29%2F%285%2A17%29%29%28hours%2Fdollar%29

%282%2F17%29%28hours%2Fdollar%29

Did you want THAT ratio?

If you wanted this the other way, then now you should know what to do.

You are correct! The rate is $8.50 per hour.
It's not that difficult though!! All you had to do was divide the total earnings: $85, by the number of hours
worked: 10, as follows:
85%2F10 = $highlight_green%288.50%29
Although the above is much easier, you could have also set it up like you tried to, as follows:
10%2F1+=+85%2FR, with R being the per-hour rate
10R = 85 ----- Cross-multiplying
R, or per-hour rate = 85%2F10, or $highlight_green%288.50%29
