Question 897331: Can someone show me how to set up this problem:
Two Companies revenue together totaled $848.5 billion. Walmart revenues were $37.3 billion less than Exxon revenues. What were the revenues of each corporation? Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
together they made 848.5 billion.
formula becomes:
w + e = 848.5 billion
walmart revenues were 37.3 billion less than exxon revenue.
formula for that becomes:
w = e - 37.3 billion
in the equation for revenues of both, you can now substitute e - 37.3 billion for w and then you can solve for e.
you get:
w + e = 848.5 billion.
replace w with e - 37.3 billion and you get:
e - 37.3 + e = 848.5 billion
simplify by combining like terms to get:
2e - 37.3 = 848.5
add 37.3 to both sides of the equation to get:
2e = 848.5 + 37.3
simplify to get:
2e = 885.8
divide both sides of the equation by 2 to get:
e = 442.9
if e = 442.9, then w must be equal to 442.9 -37.3 which is equal to 405.6 billion.
that's because walmart revenues are 37.3 billion less than exxon revenues.
