Question 897274: Lance heads directly east at a constant rate of 25 miles per hour. One hour later, Levi leaves the same spot heading directly west at a constant rate of 20 miles per hour. How long after Levi leaves will the two cyclists be 250 miles apart?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
rate * time = distance.
r * t = d

d = 250

time for Lance is T
time for Levi is T-1

Lance travels at 25 mph.
Levi travels at 20 mph.

the sum of their distances must be equal to 250.

you get:

25*T + 20*(T-1) = 250

solve for T to get T = 6
this means that T-1 = 5

the 2 cyclists will be 250 miles apart 5 hours after Levi starts.

Lance travels 6 hours at 25 miles per hour for a distance of 150 miles.
Levi travels 5 hours at 20 miles per hour for a distance of 100 miles.
100 + 150 = 250.
