Question 897242: A bicycle is on sale at 1/3 off the original price of $276. What is the sale price of the bike?
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Original Price: $276
1/3 of that original price: (1/3)*276 = 276/3 = 92
So the discount is $92. This means we are subtracting $92 and this is the amount the buyer saves.
Sale Price = (Original Price) - (Discount)
Sale Price = (276) - (92)
Sale Price = 184
The sale price is $184
-------------------------------------------------------
Alternative Method:
We take 1/3 off the price, so we're left with 1 - (1/3) = 3/3 - 1/3 = 2/3 of the original price to actually pay.
We save 1/3 of the original, we pay the 2/3 left remaining.
two thirds of 276 = (2/3)*276 = 184
and we get the same answer (just in a different way).
