Question 896281: A woman can hike 1 mph. faster down a trail to Cochita Lake than she can on the return trip uphill. It takes her 2 hours to get to the lake and 3 hours to return. What is her speed hiking down to the lake? (Directions for problem: Write as an equation. Don't solve!) Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! let her rate downhill = r
let her rate uphill = r-1
the distance is the same which we'll call d.
rate * time = distance.
going downhill this becomes d = 2r
going uphill this becomes d = 3(r-1)
since the distance is the same, you can set these equations equal to each other to get:
you get 2r = 3*(r-1)
that's your equation.
you then solve for r which answers the question because r represents the rate of travel going downhill.
