Substitute the value of P in the first equation into the second
P-8=2(J-8)
(J+5)-8=2(J-8)
Distribute
J+5-8 = 2J-16
Add 16 to each side
J+13 = 2J
Subtract J from each side
13 = J
If Jenny is 13, then Paolo is 18
8 years ago, Jenny would have been 5 and Paolo would have been 10.
