You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Mr. Punches drives 50 miles per hour for the first 3 hours of his trip.
What would his average speed have to be for the next 2 hours of his trip, if the average speed for the whole trip was 58 miles per hour?
:
Let s = the speed for the next two hrs
:
We can find the total distance of the trip, he traveled for 5 hrs and averaged 58 mph.
58 * 5 = 290 mi
In the 1st 3 hrs he traveled
50 * 3 = 150 mi
therefore he traveled
290 - 150 = 140 mi in the last 2 hrs
Find the av speed
140%2F2 = 70 mph for the last two 2 hrs
:
:
Check this, with a time equation, time = dist/speed
150%2F50 + 140%2F70 = 290%2F58
