A=L%2AW
In this case,
W=L-3
Substituting,
L%2AW=40
L%28L-3%29=40
L%5E2-3L=40
L%5E2-3L-40=0
%28L-8%29%28L%2B5%29=0
Two solutions however only the positive solution makes sense here.
L-8=0
L=8ft
Then,
W=8-3
W=5ft
