One number is y, and the other number is y-3/4; and you want y%2B%28y-3%2F4%29=42.
That is, "One number is three fourth less than the other."

2y-3%2F4=42
2y=42%2B3%2F4
2y=%28168%2B3%29%2F4
2y=171%2F4
