Question 891595: I would like to know if I'm using the correct equations for this word problem.
If you add two years to a boys age, he will be one quarter of his fathers age. Five years ago the father was one year less than ten times his sons age.
I am using these two equations...
B+2=D/4
D-5=10B-1
Are these the correct equations?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! I tink your first equation is correct.

As for the 2nd equation, The wording is very important.
I think they are saying:
" Five years ago the father was one year less than ten times his sons age [ five years ago ] ."
Then the equation would be:

---------------------------
But if I'm wrong, then your equation is correct.
The problem could have been stated more clearly,
and I can't give a 100% answer.

I think they are.
You could solve for D & B, then see if they answers work.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! That seems ambiguous.
d for dads aga, b for boy's age.
First part may give , because by that time, the father will be two years older also.
The second part gives , because at that time, the boy was also five years younger.
Simplify and adjust each equation as necessary.

I agree with josmiceli(11751), although it should have read: "Five years ago the father was one year
less than ten times his sons age, THEN, instead of: "Five years ago the father was one year less
than ten times his sons age."
The 1st is correct, but the 2nd should read:

When solved the boy should be 9 and the dad, 44.
