Question 889889: a large rectangular movie screen in an imax theater has an area of 8424 square feet. find the dimensions of the screen if it is feet longer than it is wide.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You didn't bother to say how many feet longer the screen is than it is wide, but let us assume that the difference between the length and the width is represented by , then if represents the width, must represent the length. Since the area of a rectangle is given by length times width, we can write:
which, in standard quadratic form is:
All that is left, once you figure out what the value of is supposed to be, is to solve the quadratic equation.
I did a little trial and error work starting with the assumption that the length, width, and the difference between the two are all integers and came up with three possible values: 23, 30, and 45 for . However, none of these values for results in a length and width that provide the optimum IMAX aspect ratio of 1.44:1.
Next time you post on this board, save us all a lot of extra work by actually READING what you write BEFORE you hit send.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
