5 places back puts you at zero.
So one more place back would be -1.

+5 - (-6) is the same as +5 + 6
you are subtracting a -6 which is the same thing as adding a + 6.
on the number line you to the following.
start with +5.
your next sign is a negative so you are going to go left.
the number you are going to move left is another negative so you have to reverse direction and go positive.
instead of moving to the left 6 units, you are moving to the right 6 units.
