Question:
The length of a rectangle is 3in. more than the width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 24in.
Answer:
Assume that, width = x inches
Then length = x + 3 inches
perimeter = 24 inches...
perimeter is given by the formula......
Perimeter = 2( length + width)
==> 24 = 2 ( x + 3 + x)
==> 24 = 2 ( 2x + 3 )
==> 24 = 2 * 2x + 2 * 3
==> 24 = 4x + 6
Subtract 6 from both sides..
==> 24 - 6 = 4x + 6 - 6
==> 18 = 4x
Divide both sides by 4.
==>
==>
That is width = 4.5 inches.
Length = x = 3 = 4.5 + 3 = 7.5 inches.
Hope you found the explanation useful...
