A trader sold 20 p.c of his stock at 10 p.c profit & 50 p.c of the remainder of his stock at 10 p.c. loss. What would be the rate of profit for sale of the remainder of his stock in order that the trader may make an overall profit of 5 p.c. over his entire stock ?
solution
let the total stocks is X
20%of stock (.2X)
sell price of this stocks is .2x multiplied by 1.1= .22x
remaining stocks is .8x
50% of .8x = 0.4X sell at 10% loss
sell price of this stocks = .4x multiplied by .9 = 0.36x
total sell price on both transaction = .22x +.36X = .58x
again remainder stocks =0.4x
overall profit 5% on X =1.05X
sell price of reaming = 1.05 x-.58x = 0.47X
profit % = 0.47X- 0.40x/.4x
=.07 X100/.4 =17.5 %
Answer he should sale reaming .4x stock at the profit rate of 17.5 %
