You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let's assume that the first potato is placed at the start line, and that the time spent to scoop up the potato is included in the 12ft/second.
After 1 second, he will have 3 potatoes -- including the one at the start line
After 2 second, 5 potatoes
3 seconds, 7 potatoes
4 seconds, 9 potatoes
5, 11
6, 13
7, 15
7.5 seconds to get that last potato.
