Question 886241: Two cars, one traveling 8 miles per hour faster than the other, start at the same time from the same point and travel in opposite directions. In 3 hours they are 300 miles apart. Find the rate of each car.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! In 3 hours, they are 300 miles apart.
Their rate of speed is 300/3, or 100 mph (combined)
A + B = 100 mph
A = B+8 (it's traveling 8 mph faster)
Take the known value of A from the second equation and plug it into the first.
A + B = 100
(B+8) + B = 100
2B + 8 = 100
2B = 92
B = 46
If car B is traveling 46 mph, then car A is traveling 100-46, or 54 mph.
.
Prove it:
Car A: 54 * 3 = 162 miles in three hours
Car B: 46 * 3 = 138 miles in three hours
162 + 138 = 300
Success!
