Question 885960: I don't get the question, and I don't know how to do it. Please help me on this problem: A store has a 30% discount on every item in stock. By how much is the 5% sales tax reduced on an item that regularly sells for $10? (This is exactly how it looks like in my textbook.)

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first calculate 5% of $10 = .05 * 10 = $0.50
now calculate 30% of $10 = 0.30 * 10 = $3, therefore
the cost of the item is reduced to 10 - 3 = $7
now calculate 5% of $7 = .05 * 7 = $0.35
we see that the 5% sales has been reduced by $0.50 - $0.35 = $0.15

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A 5% sales tax on a $10 item is:
+.05%2A10+=+.5+ or $.50
After tax it casts $10.50
-----------------------
The $10 item with a 30% discount
before tax costs:
+10+-+.3%2A10+=+10+-+3+
+10+-+.3%2A10+=+7+ or $7
and
+7+%2B+.05%2A7+=+7+%2B+.35+
+7+%2B+.05%2A7+=+7.35+ so
the item costs $7.35 after tax
---------------------
As for what they want:
So, the sales tax before the discount
was $.50
The sales tax after the discount
was $.35
----------------------
+.5+-+.35+=+.15+
The sales tax got reduced by $.15
Hope I got it
