Question 885937: The difference between two numbers is 17. Triple the first number is 3 times the second number plus 4. Find the two numbers.
That is the problem as it is written in the book. It seems as if the first part would be X-Y=17. And the second part 3x=3y+4 but I'm not sure how it all fits into one equation. Thank you

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The difference between two numbers is 17. Triple the first number is 3 times the second number plus 4. Find the two numbers.
***
let x=1st number
let y=2nd number
x-y=17
y=x-17
..
3x=3y+4
3x=3(x-17)+4
3x=3x-51+4
0≠-47
