You can put this solution on YOUR website! To solve this problem we will use the distance formula D = r*t.
In the problem it says that the motorcycle drives 240 miles. That is the distance. It also says it drives for four hours, but this problem has two different rates. For the first 3 hours it drives a constant speed. For the last hour it drives 20 mph slower.
Therefore,
I found this by simply plugging in the numbers to the distance formula.
When we solve for x we get.
For the first 3 hours she drove 65 mph. For the last hour she drove at 45 mph. To find the average speed we add those two numbers together and then divide by 2.
Which is equal to 55 mph.

a motorcycle drives 240 miles in 4 hours. she kept a steady speed for the first 3 hours of the trip, then she drove 20 mph slower. what were her two speeds and what is the average speed?
Faster speed: mph
Slower speed: mph
Average speed: , or mph
